Chi siamo

Yes, now INCOSE Italia is a reality! In fact, the first meeting of the Italian Chapter of INCOSE, the International Council on System Engineering, hosted at Selex-SI site, was held in Rome and this event celebrated the official take off of the association.

All the members had the opportunity to meet and introduce themselves face to face, to share the mission and the short term objectives as well as a set of events already scheduled for the next months.

As the meeting was open also to non members (but they will become hopefully soon!) our president, Francesco Ciambra, introduced the purposes of INCOSE Central and its organization.

The stage passed then to Prof. Gaudenzi of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” that gave us an outlook of the possible collaborations in the academy field, in and out of Italy, as he can act as a bridge towards several organizations, bringing in this way the voice of INCOSE Italia.

Afterwards, Ing. Marco Lisi, which was acknowledged as Honorary member for his effort in driving the start-up, talked about the anthropological aspect of the right side of human brain in contrast with its left side as a metaphoric in order to emphasize the two souls of the System Engineering: the creative innovation expressed when the engineer is asked to propose a smart and effective system solution as opposite to those tasks that require instead more analytical attitudes.

Francesco Ciambra in another technical speech, shown the model-driven approach recently used in Selex-SI to develop the system specifications at different levels of the expected behaviour, in terms of functions, their allocation and interactions, interfaces among the different system elements to speed up the subsequent implementation during the design phases.

Two last sessions, according to the planned agenda, came later on, both centered on the value brought by investing in System Engineering.
Andrea Franco, currently secretary of INCOSE Italia, presented the Who, Why and Where a System Engineer is, with the particular objective to promote the role played by this professional profile (often acting at middle-management level and involved in decision making path) also at SME –Small Medium Enterprise- level as these kind of companies characterize the Italian industry landscape but the awareness about this is still low.

This presentation paved also the way for Vincenzo Arrichiello, who reported a study of the Carnegy Mellon Institute touching the relevance of investing on System Engineering as way to prevent and limit the risks and cost exposures. This aspect was reinforced also by Carlo Leardi, which offered his competence in the Risk Management area, to propose different seminars on this subject.

Andrea Pisoni, in phone conference from UK, offered himself to act as a future bridge towards the local INCOSE UK Chapter, very active and well positioned in the INCOSE galaxy.

The final section of the convention was to agree on the objectives and the next dates and workshops. For their roles and positions, in addition to Prof. Gaudenzi for the relations with universities, also Carlo Scalvenzi was proposed to act as a liaison with Mindshare initiative (to leverage on the synergies with that kind of forum) and Gen. Cardinali as far as the relationships with the Army Forces and other governmental associations.

Best wishes to the new INCOSE Italia!
Andrea Franco, secretary of INCOSE Italia
